Two of New Zealand's largest power companies, Contact Energy and Genesis Power required a range of consulting services for the development of a new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal to cater for New Zealand's growing energy needs.

Working alongside a range of multi-disciplinary professionals CPG provided detailed information to assist with site selection, concept design and the preparation of the AEE.

Critical services provided by the CPG team included:

  • Planning and preliminary design of breakwaters at Motunui, Oanui and Port Taranaki sites as part of site selection.
  • Preparation of the port master plan to incorporate one LNG berth, berths for 4 tugs and two construction berths, including modifications required to breakwaters, navigation channel and swinging basin.
  • Layout and preliminary design of a piled LNG berth for LNG carriers up to 170,000m3
  • Layout and preliminary design for an internal breakwater, gravity block work wharf at the lee side of an internal breakwater for tugs, construction vessels and offshore supply vessels.
  • Planning and design of main breakwater strengthening works to minimise the overtopping by reinforcing the armour layer with CORELOC units and the construction of a wave wall and two extension wings to provide tranquillity and minimise sedimentation at the berth.
  • Planning and design of modifications to the breakwater and Approach Bridge to accommodate a concrete duct encapsulating LNG and other cryogenic pipes.
