As a separable portion of a refurbishment contract for selected buildings in the University of Otago Medical School, CPG undertook a detailed seismic analysis using the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) procedure.

Following the assessment, a seismic retrofit of a new laboratory area was completed by employing a Mullion and Girt type technique in order to resist in plane and out of plane seismic loadings. The structural steel section sizes were able to be limited by utilising the assessed existing strength of the unreinforced masonry walls. Due to the unique requirements of the laboratory, the new concrete floor was unable to be used as part of the structural system resulting in separate reinforced concrete foundations being constructed.
